Scout Workshops

Earn your wolf elective by exploring the world of Paleontology at the Maryland Science Center. Turn fossils into a snack, create a dino dig to take home, and develop your fossil hunting skills. Enjoy some time in our Dinosaur Mysteries exhibit after it is closed to the public. Although this is a wolf elective, all cub scouts are welcome to sign up.

Additional Information:

• This workshop extends past normal operating hours.
• Space in the classroom is limited, so we can only allow 1 paying adult per scout in the workshop. Do not sign up more adults than scouts.
• Admission is included in the ticket price for the cub scouts. Adults can purchase reduced admission at the ticket desk.
• A fun patch is included, but official belt loops must be purchased from your organization.

Earn all three Automotive Engineering badges at the Maryland Science Center. Learn about the design process while sketching an sculpting vehicle features. Build a prototype and then figure out the most efficient way to manufacture enough cars for everyone in the workshop.

Additional Information:

• Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors will be in the same workshop and will complete all requirements for their respective badges.
• Space in the classroom is limited, so we can only allow 1 adult in the classroom per group. That adult must be in the classroom at all times.

Dive into the art of bookbinding in this 3-hour workshop designed for Cadette Girl Scouts. Fold and stitch your way to a unique book and use your creative side to paper marble a cover or endpapers. Both function and style will be explored in this half-day workshop.

Each scout should bring a book (that they like for the style, not necessarily the content) to the workshop so we can explore how it was made. The book will stay intact, and you will take it home with you at the end of the day.

Scouts should also think about the type of book they want to create while in the workshop. Some options include a journal, day planner, scrapbook, memory book, and gift book.

At the Maryland Science Center, we love creative problem solving so we are very excited to offer Think Like an Engineer workshops for Girl Scouts. Complete all three of your engineering challenges and then explore our hands-on exhibits. After you leave, your troop will be ready to brainstorm, plan and implement a Take Action project in your community.

Additional Information for Brownies and Juniors :

• 2-hour workshop
• Each scout will receive a workshop patch —Note: Girl Scout badges are not included. They need to be purchased from your council. 
• Flat fee of $450 for up to 10 Girl Scouts and 2 chaperones, museum admission included
• Additional Girl Scouts cost $45 each with a maximum of 24 Scouts per workshop
• There is a fee of $15 for any additional chaperones or family members who want to explore the exhibits—we require a 1:5 ration of adults to Scouts

Additional Information for Cadettes:

• 2.5-hour workshop
• Each scout will receive a workshop patch —Note: Girl Scout badges are not included. They need to be purchased from your council. 
• Flat fee of $500 for up to 10 Girl Scouts and 2 chaperones, museum admission included
• Additional Girl Scouts cost $50 each with a maximum of 24 Scouts per workshop
• There is a fee of $15 for any additional chaperones or family members who want to explore the exhibits—we require a 1:5 ration of adults to Scouts

Scouts will earn all badge requirements in this Girl Scouts Mechanical Engineering Workshop! Learn to design, build and test multiple machines to earn their mechanical engineering badges.

Join the Maryland Science Center for a robotics workshop for Girl Scouts of all ranks. Each level will learn about robots and programming to earn all three of their robotics badges!

• Space in the classroom is limited, so we can only allow 1 adult in the classroom per group. That adult must be in the classroom at all times.
• Reduced admission can be purchased (day of the workshop) for any scouts or family members who would like to visit the exhibits outside of the workshop.

Even though koalas have fingerprints almost identical to ours, your fingerprints are still unique! Scouts (in 6th-12th grade) will learn how to identify the types of prints you have and how they are used by law enforcement versus biometric scanners. Practice taking your fingerprints so you can take a clear set home and learn how to lift those left behind at a crime scene.
