Give your jack-o-lantern a memorable send off!
Send your pumpkin flying off the roof of the Maryland Science Center!
When the Halloween festivities come to an end, bring your jack-ó-lantern to the Maryland Science Center for a memorable send-off. Our pumpkin launch tube is ready to propel your gourd down four stories from MSC’s roof to the patio below. It’s bound to be a smashing good time!
Important Information:
- Pumpkin MUST be a rollable shape with a diameter under 14 inches at the widest point to fit through our rooftop drop chute.
- Pumpkins will start to be collected on the Harbor Patio at 10:00am and all pumpkins must be dropped off by 11:50am.
- MSC staff will be throwing pumpkins off the roof as guests watch from the patio below.
- Pumpkins will be numbered upon intake and announced pre-drop and during drop so you know when yours is being propelled to the ground below.
- There will be two drops taking place: 11:00am and noon.
- Outdoor participation in Pumpkin Smash is free to the public. You must purchase a ticket to enter the Maryland Science Center.
- All pumpkins smashed at this event will be composted after the event. No glitter, paint, or crayon please!

The Maryland Science Center has hosted our annual Pumpkin Smash for the past eight years as a fun way to divert pumpkin waste from the landfill. In 2024 we collected and composted 500 pounds of pumpkin!
