The Outstanding Young Scientist award program was established in 1959 to recognize and celebrate extraordinary contributions of young Maryland scientists. Endowed in 2011 by a generous gift by Reverend Frank R. Haig, S.J., Ph.D., past chairman of our Scientific Council, from the estate of his brother, Alexander M. Haig, Jr. Haig was a West Point graduate and four-star general, with a keen interest in applied science. The award is given in General Haig’s name.

Congratulations to our 2026 Outstanding Young Scientist:

Dr. Gagandeep Anand— Space Telescope Science Institute

Dr. Anand’s field of expertise is near-field cosmology—the study of the structure and evolution of the universe using galaxies in our own cosmic backyard.

Most notably, he was the lead-author on a publication that confirmed the discovery of Cloud 9, the first failed (starless) galaxy using the Hubble Space Telescope.
