Program Presenter and Developer

The Maryland Science Center is looking for an enthusiastic team player to join our education team as a Program Presenter and Developer. Help us continue our mission of providing quality, informal science education within and beyond our exhibit halls. This is an exciting opportunity to develop and deliver the Science Center’s signature style of STEM education to our general visitors and school groups.

BASIC FUNCTIONS:

  • Delivers interactive presentations
  • Delivers program presentations in other education department programs including school programs and public programs
  • Participates in other short-term programming opportunities
  • Assists in the creation of new science-based, hands-on experiences
  • Assists in the creation of and presents summer camp programming
  • Assists in the training and evaluation of Traveling Science staff in science-based presentations

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Present scheduled science demonstrations, conduct hands-on science classroom programs, pop-up science (informal, hands-on science presentations), and other interactive programming to general visitors and school groups within and outside the museum setting.
  • Deliver programming as a regular part of weekly assignment for the public programs and school programs.
  • Provide programming ideas and presentations for education or museum-wide projects including homeschool, promo-days, and other identified programs.
  • Assists in the development of new programs and interactive components associated with Traveling Science, Family Science Night, and Public Programs.
  • Suggest improvements for existing presentations, materials, equipment, and scheduling.
  • Make suggestions and recommendations for new programming.
  • Work cooperatively with STEAM Team and attend meetings as necessary.
  • Assist in the evaluative process of new prototypes, materials, and scripts.
  • Participate in presentations that highlight specific themes, create an atmosphere of engagement, and represent the MSC in a positive manner.
  • Participates in creating new summer camp programming.
  • Actively participates in summer camp as Lead Instructor or Assistant as needed.
  • Assists in training staff and volunteers in presentations as directed. Assists in evaluation of progress and makes recommendations.
  • Assume other duties within the scope of this job description as deemed necessary by the Senior Director of Education or other higher authority.

Requirements:

  • A.A. degree or directly related work experience required.
  • B.S. degree in science, education, or other related field preferred.
  • Requires one year of experience in the presentation of informal, educational programming. Experience performing in front of an audience highly desired. Experience in program development desired.

Knowledge of:

  • Basic and general science principles with a capability to apply such knowledge to the creation of informal education programming that emphasizes both participant and staff engagement
  • Basic computer programs including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Basic audio/visual equipment

Skills:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Theater/live performance/public presentations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Must have a Maryland driver’s license and clean driving record

Ability to:

  • Work without direct supervision as necessary
  • Be flexible and adapt to constantly changing situations
  • Act as a senior member of the TSP team
  • Contribute as an active member of a team of staff and volunteers
  • Work occasional evening and regular weekend hours
  • Lift and carry 50 lbs

This employee may perform some work of a senior level position in the process of gaining knowledge and experience necessary for advancement and may also perform some of the work in a lower-rated position when required. Normal duties and responsibilities include assistance to other employees.
