Entry Level

Part-Time Education Staff

Energetic educators desired for summer employment!

Are you creative, willing to learn, and comfortable interacting with the general public? If so, the Maryland Science Center is looking for you. A variety of positions are available for individuals interested in spending time in a fast-paced, engaging environment.

Applicants must have completed at least one year of college coursework or comparable experience. Interest and/or coursework in science or education are encouraged. All applicants must be able to work both independently and as a part of a team. All applicants must be willing to wear a mask covering mouth and nose for the entirety of shift. All positions are seasonal.

SciLab Staff

Support guests in completing self-guided chemistry and biology activities. Responsibilities include orienting guests, answering questions, and resetting lab stations and equipment between groups. Applicants must be able to be friendly but firm and have basic knowledge in chemistry and biology topics. Prior experience in customer service and interaction with school-age children is highly desired.

Availability 10:00-5:00 three days a week, including at least one weekend day, is required.

DIY Staff

Support guests as they learn through tinkering. Responsibilities include facilitating DIY activities with an emphasis on creativity and experimentation, as well as maintaining activity materials and the program space. Applicants should have basic tool skills and willingness to enthusiastically embrace a wide spectrum of making, from woodworking to papercraft to sewing. Prior experience in customer service and interaction with school-age children is highly desired.

Availability 10:00-5:00 three days a week, including at least one weekend day, is required.

Science Engagement Catalysts

Embody our “Let’s Science” mission as you engage guests in scientific experiences. Proactively facilitate hands-on, minds-on activities on a wide variety of STEM topics. Applicants must be comfortable communicating in front of groups and able to learn quickly, be flexible, and maintain safety protocols. Prior experience in customer service and interaction with school-age children is highly desired.

Availability 10:00-5:00 three days a week, including at least one weekend day, is required.

Early Childhood Staff

Engage young visitors and their families with fun hands-on activities as they learn through play. Staff responsibilities include interacting with children and supporting the daily operation and maintenance of the early childhood exhibit. Experience with young children in a group setting is highly desired.

Planetarium Presenter

Present astronomy programs in our Digital Planetarium. Operate and monitor computer and projection equipment, and manage crowds and physical space. Public speaking, knowledge/interest in astronomy and night sky, comfortable learning digital planetarium software and technology, and a keen eye for detail are all necessary skills.

Summer Camp All-day Assistants

Provide support to week-long summer camp programs by assisting with materials, working with small groups, and providing supervision. Each program is divided by age and topic and taught by education department staff. Must be available all five weekdays from 8:30-4:30 and work at least four camp sessions. Camp sessions run July 8th to August 9th.

All positions require:

  • Experience working with the general public (including children)
  • Comfort in front of audiences
  • Familiarity with science content
  • Ability to provide excellent guest service to museum visitors
  • Demonstrate good judgement, personal responsibility, and productive impact
  • Ability to pass background check or fingerprinting in the case of summer camp
  • Attend training sessions as part of on-boarding process
