DIY Program Staff – part-time

Are you creative, willing to learn, and comfortable interacting with the general public?  If so, the Maryland Science Center is looking for you.

Support guests as they learn through tinkering. Responsibilities include facilitating DIY activities with an emphasis on creativity and experimentation, as well as maintaining activity materials and the program space. Applicants should have basic tool skills and willingness to enthusiastically embrace a wide spectrum of making, from woodworking to papercraft to sewing. Prior experience in customer service and interaction with school-age children is highly desired.

Availability 9:45-5:00 three days a week (Tuesday – Sunday). At least one weekend day is required.

Basic Functions:

  • Facilitate visitor experience in The Shed
  • Model developmentally appropriate behavior with children
  • Assist in planning and implementation of all types of programming for various audiences
  • Assist in maintenance and cleaning of The Shed supplies and equipment
  • Attend training as directed by supervisor

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate visitor experience in The Shed
    • Greet, engage, and assist visitors answer questions as needed. Observe, monitor and maintain safe practices
  • Model developmentally appropriate behavior with children
    • Demonstrate age appropriate behavior with children of all ages
  • Assist in planning and implementation of all programming
    • Develop and lead activities as needed according to standards for program development and current goals and guidelines
  • Assist in the maintenance and cleaning of The Shed supplies and equipment
    • Reset all activities at opening and closing. Observe safety and cleaning procedures established by supervisor and complete daily cleaning projects
  • Attend training and complete reading as directed by supervisor
    • Works towards a better understanding of educational development through workshop attendance and independent reading
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Education:

  • A.A. degree preferred in science, teaching other related field.
  • A high school diploma and related work experience may substitute for some of the educational requirement.

  • Speak and feel comfortable in front of and directly to children individually and in groups, as well as, with adult visitors
  • Convey guest services information
  • Provide tailer directions based on visitor needs
  • Remain imperturbable and composed in all situations
  • Take initiative
  • Accurately utilize tools

Basic Requirements:

  • Must be able to pass background check
