Share your passion for all things astronomical by leading programs in the Crosby Ramsey Memorial Observatory.
The Observatory presenter will present Observatory programs for a variety of audiences, maintain Observatory equipment and facilities, research and recommend improvements to the Observatory, and respond to public inquiries.
Applicants must have knowledge of the night sky, astronomy and space science, as well as telescope operation, care and maintenance. Applicants must be comfortable with public speaking for a wide range of audiences. All applicants must be able to work both independently and as a part of a team.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Present programs such as Friday Night Stargazing, Sungazing Weekends, Evenings Under the Stars, and more to a variety of audiences
- Be responsible for the safe operation of the Observatory and related programs
- Maintain equipment and facilities including the Observatory’s telescope, dome, equipment, and surrounding areas
- Research, recommend, and implement improvements to programming and equipment to enhance the public’s use and enjoyment of the Observatory
- Supervise and train volunteers
- Respond to public inquires about astronomy via email or phone
Knowledge and Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree desired. Degree in astronomy or another science-related field preferred
- Some experience with telescope operation, preferably for public audiences
- Knowledge of the night sky, astronomy and space science
- Knowledge of telescope operation, care, and maintenance
- Familiarity with local public observatories, astronomy clubs, and vendors preferred
- Familiarity with computers, astronomical and audio-visual software
Requirements:
- Must be able to pass background check
