Early Childhood Program Specialist

The Maryland Science Center is looking for an enthusiastic team player to join our education team in the Kids Room as an Early Childhood Program Specialist. The Kids Room at the Maryland Science Center serves children 0-8 years of age and their caregivers. This is an exciting opportunity to continue our mission of providing quality, informal science education by developing and running activities for our youngest guests.

Basic Functions:

  • Plan an implement school, homeschool, summer camp, outreach, and drop in programming
  • Supervise, train, and empower part time staff and volunteers
  • Initiate, create, and maintain relationships internally and externally
  • Oversee care and maintenance for all Kids Room animals
  • Oversee cleaning of Kids Room supplies and equipment and assist in their maintenance
  • Facilitate visitor experience in the Kids Room
  • Meet children at their developmentally appropriate age level and be a model for other adults in the building
  • Assist with outreach programming and teacher workshops
  • Assist in administrative tasks relating to the daily operations of Kids Room
  • Attend training and complete reading as directed by supervisor
  • Other duties as assigned

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop and lead early childhood activities as needed according to standards for program development and current goals and guidelines
  • Engage staff in activities, provide ideas and support to further understanding of early childhood development
  • Document and address part time employee performance and conduct concerns, and provide guidance as needed
  • Work side by side with museum staff across departments but work most closely with marketing and education
  • Pursue opportunities for partnership inside museum walls
  • Maintain relationships with outside groups and handle logistics related to their interactions on the museum floor
  • Train staff in handling and care of all Kids Room animals. Oversee their vet care and upkeep
  • Coordinate part time staff to clean and maintain the exhibit, establish safe cleaning procedures, and complete cleaning projects
  • Greet, engage, and assist visitors; Answer questions as needed; Observe, monitor, and maintain safe practices
  • Be willing to play, be silly, and learn with visitors and demonstrate appropriate interactions with young children and their adults
  • Assist with the development and implementation of outreach programming and teacher professional development as necessary
  • Assist with scheduling and other administrative tasks
  • Work towards a better understanding of early childhood development and age-appropriate activities through workshop attendance and independent reading

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Emphasis in early childhood education, education, science, or social science preferred
  • A combination of coursework and relevant experience may be submitted
  • Familiarity with an early childhood classroom or informal education setting, curriculum development, and experience working with adult audiences

Knowledge of:

  • General behaviors and abilities of young children
  • Developmentally appropriate engagement with young children
  • Basic science
  • Educationally sound curriculum and pedagogical standards for young standards

Skills:

Ability to:

  • Be comfortable speaking to children individually and in groups
  • Be comfortable speaking to, and engaging adult visitors

All hired employees must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Staff in this position must be willing to wear a mask covering nose and mouth when engaging with young visitors on the museum floor.
