Make a mess in the name of science!

If you can’t make it to Mess Fest here at the Maryland Science Center or just want to continue the sloppy fun at home, join us for Mess Fest Online! We’ll be showing you some ewwy, gooey science you can do right at home with videos and Science at Home activities!  Get ready for a messy day of science fun!

noon – slime time

Kick Mess Fest off with a classic! We’ll share our favorite recipe for homemade slime as well as a few options to customize your slimy creations.

1:00 PM – Pendulum art

Allow the forces of gravity and friction to do the work as you experiment with physics and create unique swirling art.

2:00 PM – pH tie-dye

Tie-dye a shirt with acids, bases, and a homemade indicator made from an all natural dye!

3:00 Pm – Splatter pattern Painting

Wrap up your messy day of science with one last painting project and discover what happens when you drop paint balloons from increasing heights.

Slime time

  • Borax powder
  • School glue (white and clear are both fine)
  • Water
  • Measuring cup
  • Measuring spoons
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon
  • Food dye (optional)
  • Glitter (optional)
  • Craft sand (optional)
  • Highlighter (optional)

pendulum art

  • Ladder or 2 stools/chairs
  • Broom/mop handle
  • String/rope
  • Plastic bottle or cup
  • Paint
  • Water
  • Tarp or newspaper
  • Something to paint (canvas, paper, t-shirt, etc.)

ph tie- dye

  • Head of red cabbage
  • Blender
  • Water
  • Strainer
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Lemon juice
  • Dish soap
  • Paintbrushes
  • 2 small bowls
  • T-shirt (white)

Splatter Pattern Painting

  • Water balloons
  • Paint
  • Squeeze bottle
  • Something to paint (canvas, paper, t-shirt, etc.)
