About Lunchtime Lectures:

This fall, we’re launching our Lunchtime Lecture series. On the second Friday of the month, you can enjoy a presentation by a member of our Scientific Council on topics ranging from medicine to dinosaurs to the edges of the universe.

All lectures will be held at noon in the MSC Theater at the Maryland Science Center and will last an hour, including time for questions and answers. Admission is free; no registration is required. Feel free to bring your lunch or purchase lunch from Elements Café on the first floor of the Maryland Science Center.

Pain, Pain, Go Away.

Everyone has first-hand knowledge about pain, most often as it serves as a warning signal for potential or present injury. But, even as you think to yourself “My foot hurts,” the pain is not really in your foot, it is in your brain. Neuroscience has recently revealed several remarkable discoveries about how your brain tells you that you are in pain, including when pain “goes rogue,” and appears without apparent injury.

Are We Alone?

The search for intelligent, technological life elsewhere in the universe. I’ll start with the Fermi paradox, and briefly allude to some of the more speculative/science fiction type of answers. Moving on to the Drake equation and just discussing the various factors that go into it, in light of the latest results and theories. We will touch on astronomical, geological, biological, and sociological topics that relate to the question. I’ll finish with an overview of the SETI efforts and how we would handle first contact.
