Digital Harbor High School
Tricia Lalloo is interested in technology and the role it plays in our everyday lives. She hopes one day to have her own business that involves software and hardware training and jobs for teens and young adults. Indicative of her drive and determination, Tricia enrolled in AP Literature, Honors Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus despite already having fulfilled the majority of requirements for graduation.
When she’s not attending classes or studying, Tricia can be found practicing with the school’s soccer team or preparing for a Student Government Meeting. A dedicated volunteer, Tricia earned over 100 hours of service cleaning up local parks, collecting for food drives, and serving as a school tour guide during Open House. She is a member of the National Honor Society.
Digital Harbor High School
Shawdae Frederick hopes to become a neonatal nurse working in a hospital NICU caring for premature babies and helping parents and families cope with the added stress of premature birth. She was inspired as a young child by the care and professionalism of NICU nurses caring for her sibling who was born five months premature.
When not studying to maintain her Principal’s Honor Roll status, Shawdae balances her time as a member of the Indoor, Outdoor, and Cross Country Track and Field teams, serves as President of Student Government, Secretary of the National Honor Society and dedicates her time to the Prom Committee. She won Digital Harbor’s Einstein Award for her mastery of Anatomy and Physiology, and was the 2013 MVP on both the Indoor and Outdoor Track team. Shawdae also volunteers in the community helping foster better student-resident relations, participates in clean-ups, and helps organize clothing donations to homeless shelters.
Western High School
Rita Gunter is from a family of 4 brothers and 4 sisters. She will be graduating from Western High School with an 80 average. Rita hopes to attend Clark Atlanta University or Howard University. She has applied for a number of scholarships because of the financial situation of her family and she also expects to do work study.
A real Renaissance woman, during senior year she has taken Forensic Science, Pre-calculus, AP English Literature and Composition, Economics, Piano, Psychology, and Russian IV Honors. She has been involved in a variety of activities- president of junior class, Association of Student Councils of Baltimore City, and a group to promote cooperation between African American and Jewish communities. Her AP history teacher from junior year describes her as outspoken, committed and energetic. Her guidance counselor says she has Leadership and organizational skills and is strong, confident and productive. She believes that Rita has exemplifies the Western motto: We have received the light ; let us give forth light because she found herself at Western and gives back so much.
Rita was part of Morgan University National Security Agency summer program and studied HIV strains. This sparked her interest in medicine as a potential career. She also visited Ghana as with the Habesha Black to Our Roots Program, a Pan African organization. She raised $3000 for the trip and prepared by learning Ghanaian language and history. She wrote about climbing a tall mountain and finally reaching the summit to see a vast plain below. She was elated and realized that it mirrored her life of climbing a mountain of family issues, financial hardships, and challenges at school. She quoted William Lyon Phelps, “A well-ordered life is like climbing a tower; the view halfway up is better than the view from, the base and it steadily becomes finer as the horizon expands.” Rita recommitted herself to excellence and says with confidence. “I have many more mountains to climb and horizons to see.
Baltimore Polytechnic Institute
Diamonique Clark comes from a family of 4 brothers and 2 sisters, two of whom are in college. Her parents are in helping professions and they have been her inspiration. Rita will attend Stevenson University and was also accepted at Morgan and Towson Universities and Temple University in Philadelphia. A senior at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, she has a 90 average and is the top 10% of her class.
She is part of the prestigious INGENUITY PROJECT a highly competitive program to prepare promising students for careers in science, mathematics and technology. Her schedule at Poly has been demanding academically and she has studied hard, attended coach class and pushed herself to meet challenging requirements. At first INGENUITY was shock and she was frustrated, but she persevered and has been successful.
During senior year she has completed AP Calculus, AP Biology, Chemistry Honors, Marine Biology, Physics Honors, and English Honors. As a junior she took AP statistics, AP US History, AP US Government. Diamonique’s goal is to become a nurse, a choice influenced by her volunteer experience as a peer educator at Planned Parenthood. This experience helped her accept different kinds of people and solidified her interest in the biological and medical sciences.
DAKYRA TATYANA BLOUNT
National Academy Foundation High School
Dakyra is a senior at National Academy Foundation High School in Baltimore. She intends to pursue studies in biology in anticipation of a career in the medical field. Seeing people who are struggling financially and medically, Dakyra expresses determination and focus upon her ultimate goal of becoming a doctor.
Students at National Academy Foundation High School select a “major” and complete coursework to obtain a certificate in an academy. Dakyra chose the Information Technology academy. During a job shadowing experience at Loyola University of Maryland, she learned web design, and gained exposure to assisting students having technology problems. And, Dakyra was among a select group of students dually enrolled at Baltimore City Community College, where she takes courses and earns college credit while completing her high school classes. She is a National Honor Society member and a member of Beta Club, where she has served as Vice-President. Outside of her academic activities, Dakyra has served as a volunteer at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
In the Fall, Dakyra will attend Towson University.
TIHITINA AYELE CHAMISO
Patterson High School
Tihitina will graduate from Patterson High School in Baltimore this year and will attend college in the fall, pursuing studies that will prepare her to become a doctor. She was born and raised in Ethiopia, where she became acutely aware of the many problems experienced by young women in her country. Wanting their daughter to have a good education and be free to pursue her goals, Tihitina’s parents sent her to the United States to live with her older sister. Adjusting to life here has been a challenge, yet Tihitina has maintained excellent grades and anticipates graduating in the top 10% of her class.
Her teacher describes Tihitina as a leader in the classroom with great capacity to motivate her peers to learn mathematics. She works very well in groups and is also capable of working well independently. Tihitina has participated in the Building STEPS program, a competitive educational and professional development program that exposes bright, underserved students to science and technology-based careers. There she demonstrated an active interest in STEM-related courses.
In addition to her academic pursuits, Tihitina is actively involved in athletics and loves to read.
Paul L. Dunbar High School
Jasmin Johnson currently attends Paul L. Dunbar High School in Baltimore. She is a member of Dunbar’s Chapter of the National Honor Society, placed 2nd in a regional Robotics Engineering Competition, and received Morgan State University’s “Introduce a Girl to Engineering” Award. Ms. Johnson is a member of the Dunbar Concert Band, and enjoys playing volleyball and tennis.
This fall Ms. Johnson will pursue a major in computer science and engineering, at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania this fall.
Frederick Douglas High School
Ariel Foster will graduate from Frederick Douglass High School in Baltimore in June. She will be attending The Community College of Baltimore County in the Fall semester 2010, pursuing studies in mathematics. Ms. Foster plans to become a mathematics teacher and is especially interested in helping students who struggle with math.
In addition to her academic studies Ms. Foster has participated in track and field, and received recognition for her acting skill in drama class. As a young girl Ms. Foster was part of a youth dance ministry through her church.
Baltimore Polytechnic Institute
Janiera is a graduate of The Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and will be entering Rutgers University in the Fall. Janiera has not only excelled in her classes, where she has a 3.95 GPA over the last seven semesters, but she has proven to be a spirited student leader. She has been a member of Poly’s indoor and outdoor track team since ninth grade, and over the last two years as captain, has helped lead the women’s track and field team to become Poly’s first regional outdoor champions
Digital Harbor High School
Timothy is a graduate from Digital Harbor High School where he was ranked second in his class and will enter University of Maryland College Park in the Fall. He was the Vice President of the National Honor Society while at Digital Harbor. Outside the classroom, he excels as a leader, whether it be in sports where he was a triple letterman in tennis, soccer and swimming, or while volunteering during Vacation Bible School for the Catholic Community in South Baltimore.
