November 28, 2011
Who’s Your Mummy? (Ages 9-14)
The practice of mummification has been around for millennia, involving chemicals and/or natural processes in the preservation of bodies. Study the techniques of the ancients and discover how organic materials may be preserved for posterity.
December 5, 2012
Engineer by Nature (Ages: 9-14)
Learn how the natural world around us can help inspire solutions to some of our biggest human problems. Put your new understanding of biomimicry into action as we tackle topics of interest and design future technologies.
December 12, 2012
Electro-Magnetic Tinkershop (Double Session 1 hour and 45 minutes) (Ages 9-14)
Spend some time in our tinkershop and learn about the connections between two invisible forces: electricity and magnetism. Once you understand how to harness these forces you can create all sorts of amazing contraptions. What will you build?
December 12, 2012
Building 101 (Ages 6-8)
Examine real buildings and learn what holds them up, explore different materials, then design your own structure and watch it come to life.
January 30, 2013
The Science of Spin Art (Ages 9-14)
Before you get the paint flying learn how spin art gets its groovy looks. Students will explore inertia and centripetal force, and even relate art and planetary motion.
February 6, 2013
Mind Your Beeswax (Ages 9-14)
Beeswax is a natural material made by bees and used by humans for millennia. Explore the uses of beeswax throughout history and in today’s consumer market, and try your hand at making one of the most popular products.
February 13, 2013
Is it Alive? (Ages 9-14)
We define life in different ways, but everyone agrees that certain characteristics are common to living things. Explore what it means for something to be alive and carry out an experiment to see if you can detect life.
February 13, 2013
BRRR It's Cold (Ages 6-8)
Animals adapt in many ways to cold weather, including hibernation, growing thick fur, and heading south. Take a look at some of our animals and learn about how they change to deal with the cold.
February 20, 2013
Eeeek - A Mouse! (Ages 9-14)
Explore how people interact with computers, from simple devices in use every day, to new technologies that are changing the way people use computers. Then build your own controller for a computer game.
February 27, 2013
Rover Races (Ages 9-14)
Become the rover on a team that includes a driver, timer, and judge. In this race, finishing the course at all takes priority over how long it takes to finish. Learn about the latest Mars mission and what it takes to be a Mars Rover Driver.
March 6, 2013
Starlight and Star Life (Ages 9-14)
Follow the life cycle of a star to discover which characteristics determine its fate. Chart the evolution of star types and explore ways to determine distance to and size of stars.
March 13, 2013
In a Pickle (Ages 9-14)
Have you ever wondered what makes a pickle, a pickle? Discover the answer to that question as you use kitchen chemistry to explore how brines preserve pickley treats.
March 13, 2013
Circuit Circus (Ages 6-8)
Draw with a signing pencil and make a circuit with play dough in this introduction to electricity. Look for lights and listen for tunes as we explore conductors and insulators with everyday materials.
March 20, 2013
Build a Dam (Ages 9-14)
Build and test your own dams. Discover the forces that act on dams, and how engineers make sure they are strong enough for the job.
March 27, 2013
Art and the Cosmic Connection (Ages 9-14)
Discover science through art. Learn about our Solar System with art in mind. Explore the geology of planetary objects and create art inspired by planetary images.
April 10, 2013
Engineered by Design (Ages 9-14)
Imagine, plan, create, test, and improve. Engineers follow a strategic path when presented with a problem to solve. Engage your inner engineer while you design, build, and test your own solution to a specific challenge.
April 17, 2013
Fungus Among Us (Ages 9-14)
Yeast makes bread rise, but how does it do that? Explore what this fungus needs to live and make your own bread dough.
April 17, 2013
Oops, science! (Ages 6-8)
Even scientists make mistakes and sometimes learn from them. Ivory soap, Coke, and microwaves are just a few mistakes scientists made. Learn lab safety as you experiment and discover the fun stories behind these whoopsies. Maybe you will turn your next oops into a eureka moment!
April 24, 2013
Flight of the Butterflies (Ages 9-14)
Look at real monarch larvae and learn about their life cycle. Learn what you can do to attract them to your yard and why milkweed is so important to the monarch’s survival.
