Continuing Education Series Workshops

Unearth the ancient world of the dinosaurs, challenge the principles of physics, get sun smart and learn new tips and techniques for teaching science in your classroom. The Maryland Science Center is filled with innovative new educational opportunities for educators and students. Explore activities and new insights into creative exhibit floor exploration for students. Workshops include stipends!

Pluto and the Outer Solar System

This workshop is being postponed to later this school year at a date to be determined. Please check back for further information.

Explore the outer regions of our solar system, including the now-reclassified “dwarf planet” Pluto and the icy Kuiper Belt beyond.  Follow the journey of the New Horizons spacecraft, on its way to Pluto and slated for a 2015 arrival, and hear from NASA New Horizons mission personnel.

The workshop will include:

  • A presentation from a member of the New Horizons team

  • A Science On a Sphere program about the solar system

  • Demonstrations of activities for the classroom

  • Lunch and a $100 stipend for each participating teacher.

Flight of the Monarch Butterflies

View an early version of the upcoming IMAX film Flight of the Butterflies, slated for release later in spring 2012.   Explore classroom activities about the Monarchs amazing migration across North America, their habitats and life cycle, and hear from experts in field of Monarch study about how you and your students can become involved in citizen science projects to help the Monarchs.
