"Mapping Science" offers visitors the chance to explore the variety of maps at the Maryland Science Center. The perception of maps as only static and two-dimensional will be challenged as we highlight the various ways maps are used in the fields of astronomy, biology, paleontology, and earth science. Star maps, the human genome, dinosaur timelines, and hurricane patterns are all forms of maps.
Highlights of "Mapping Science" include:
• A scavenger hunt where explorers pick up an activity sheet and begin the chase through the time of dinosaurs, inside the human body, and along the Chesapeake Bay. A map station is located at each stop on the scavenger hunt where visitors create a rubbing and discover a cool fact about the map. By visiting all the map stations, visitors can create a special image.
•Hands-on activities demonstrate how maps are used in everyday life, In one "brain teaser", visitors are given a map of a school bus route. Their challenge is to get the bus to school–but they can go to each bus stop only once. They will be able to try out their solution on the map using markers. Another activity challenges visitors to find a fossil from each continent in Dinosaur Mysteries and write their findings on a world map.
•Planetarium shows and live Science on a Sphere™ presentations show the technology of mapping using satellites to learn more about out planet and the universe.
