Sense of Smell Day Permeates Maryland Science Center: Day of Stinky Family Events Features Rotten Sneaker Contest

The Maryland Science Center will celebrate the twelfth annual Sense of Smell Day on Saturday, April 30, 2005 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The day’s events are designed to teach children and adults the importance of the sense of smell. Fun and educational events are scheduled all day long.

The most popular activity of the day, the Odor-Eaters Rotten Sneaker Contest™ is open to the first 25 rotten-sneaker-wearers ages 5-15 who register prior to the 2:00 PM contest. A panel of judges or “odorologists” consisting of local celebrities and professionals will select the most fetid footwear. All entries will receive prizes, but the stinkiest will receive $200, a Maryland Science Center Adventurer (family) Level membership, and a trip to the Rotten Sneaker Contest finals in Montpelier, Vermont in March, 2006.

Other smelly activities include a Smelling Bee, Jelly Bean Test, and an S.Q. (Scent Quotient) Test. In the Smelling Bee, visitors will try to identify mystery scents for the chance to win prizes. While taking the Jelly Bean Test, visitors try to differentiate the taste between like-colored candies without being able to smell. The S.Q. Test will ask participants to match bottled scents to photographs.

A furry, four-legged hero from the Chesapeake Search and Rescue Dog Association and a fellow canine in blue from the Baltimore City Police Department’s K-9 unit will demonstrate their amazing sense of smell at 12:00 PM. The demonstration will explain how these dogs are trained to be life savers and super scent trackers.

The Kids Room, an interactive learning center for children up to 8 years of age, will feature a smell-oriented story time, smelly play dough, the “stinkiest family foot” game.

A special program, Scent Science LIVE!, will be presented at 12:30 PM and 1:30 PM by Science Center educators, who will explain how the sense of smell functions, the connection between the sense of taste and smell, how smell alerts us to danger, helps us sleep, and improves our moods.

Local merchants and retailers will provide a wide-range of free scent-oriented give-aways and prizes such as candles and bath products, and provide aromatherapy samples. Other give-aways for children will include Snotty Nose key chains, scratch and sniff stickers, rubber animal noses, Sense of Smell Day pencils with strawberry and grape scented erasers.

All activities are on-going throughout the day unless noted and are free with paid admission to the Maryland Science Center. Sense of Smell Day is sponsored by the Sense of Smell Institute, Ltd.
