200 BODY SPECIMENS TO INCLUDE DEBUT OF "OUR THREE POUND GEM"
BODY WORLDS 2 to Open at Maryland Science Center February 2

When more than 200 real human body specimens are unveiled on February 2, 2007 in Gunther von Hagens' BODY WORLDS 2: The Anatomical Exhibition of Real Human Bodies, Maryland Science Center visitors will see a newly added component to this attendance-breaking exhibition: a human brain.

The Brain: Our Three Pound Gem will make its East Coast debut as a special feature of the Maryland Science Center exhibition. The presentation of this new component in BODY WORLDS 2 was inspired by findings in neuroscience on brain development and function, brain disease and disorder, and brain performance and improvement.

BODY WORLDS 2 is the original and acclaimed exhibition of over 200 body specimens that have been preserved through the process of Plastination. At the Maryland Science Center, more than 20 whole bodies presented in unique and surprising poses, dozens of individual organs, and transparent body slices will offer visitors an in-depth view of the intricately-designs human body, and comparative anatomy focusing on wellness and disease. The exhibition displays the anatomy, physiology, and effects of lifestyle choices on the human body.

BODY WORLDS 2 is the largest exhibition ever on display at the Maryland Science Center, occupying more than 15,000 square feet of exhibition space.

BODY WORLDS was created by German anatomist and physician, Dr. Gunther von Hagens, and has attracted nearly 25 million visitors worldwide.

During the process of Plastination, all bodily fluids and soluble fats are replaced with reactive fluid plastics, providing the flexibility and strength needed to preserve and display specimens in realistic forms without the use of glass barriers of formaldehyde.

Gunther von Hagens' BODY WORLDS exhibitions are the original, precedent-setting public anatomical exhibitions of real human bodies, and the only anatomical exhibits that use donated bodies, willed by donors for the express purpose of serving BODY WORLDS' mission to educate the public about health and anatomy. To date, more than 8,000 people have agreed to donate their bodies to BODY WORLDS for Plastination and use in the exhibits.

The Maryland Science Center will offer extended hours, public programs, and events throughout the run of BODY WORLDS 2. Beginning February 2, 2008, the Maryland Science Center will open at 9:30 am on weekdays and 9:00 am on Saturday and Sunday. The museum will stay open until 6:00 pm on weekdays and 9:00 pm Friday-Sunday. Hours will be extended further March 17-30, and beginning May 23 for the summer season.
