Titanic The Artifact Exhibition

NOW THROUGH january 2, 2006

Hurry Hurry Step Right Up... the circus is in town. Circus—Science Under the Big Top is an amazing touring exhibition that puts you in the center ring.

Reach for the trapeze bar high in the air, walk the high wire nine feet above the crowds, traverse the balance bar using a long pole. Yes, visitors can safely enter the world of aerial wizardry—securely strapped in harnesses—as they perform their aerial feats suspended above the exhibit floor. Gravity, inertia, your body’s own mechanisms for balance and concentration and much more science behind the circus are yours to discover in this massive exhibit.

Everything is hands-on in Circus—Science Under the Big Top. Can you contort yourself to fit into a small box? Can you juggle? Can you figure out the right angle to ensure a safe landing for the human cannonball? Flying isn’t the hard part—landing in the net is!

Visit clown alley to see the comic’s tools of the trade. Adults and kids can try on costumes and become the ring master, a lion, or the balancing bear. Create your own circus music to accompany the various acts. Follow the blade path on a fluoroscope as the sword swallower practices her trade.

Circus—Science Under the Big Top is a total immersion in the three ring world and a look at the science behind the fun. Visitors enter a sideshow tent to explore the history, mystery, illusion and reality of sideshow performers. Learn how daredevils use science to survive their stunts and how leverage, compression, and tension help accomplish amazing feats of strength.

Put yourself to the test in this exhibit. Use reason and deduction to interpret the “leftovers” from the circus to see if you can identify the animals that left the leftover behind. How well did they digest their food? Use your nose to try and identify various circus smells. Train your eyes on the flea circus—are they really performing?

All this and more await you under the Big Top at the Maryland Science Center. Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, and kids of all ages will be amazed, thrilled, and entertained at Circus—Science Under the Big Top.
