Summer Educators

Energetic educators desired for summer employment!

Are you creative, willing to learn, and comfortable interacting with the general public?  If so, the Maryland Science Center is looking for you.  A variety of positions are available for individuals interested in spending their summer in a fast-paced, engaging environment.

Applicants must have completed at least one year of college coursework or comparable experience. Interest and/or coursework in science or education are encouraged. All applicants must be able to work both independently and as a part of a team.


DIY Staff: Facilitate hands-on/DIY activities with guests in a makerspace environment. Applicants should have an interest in DIY/maker culture and experience working with children. Staff responsibilities include interacting with guests, supporting daily operation of the makerspace, and maintaining equipment and tools. Weekday and weekend opportunities exist.

Early Childhood Staff: Interact with children and their families as they learn through play, engage young visitors and their families with fun hands-on activities, and support the daily operation of the early childhood exhibit, including the care of classroom animals. Experience with young children in a group setting highly desired.

Science Educator: Engage visitors with a wide variety of hands-on science activities and demonstrations, and provide interactive interpretation for dinosaur exhibit. Applicants must be comfortable interacting with people of all ages and a quick learner.

SciLab Staff: Support guests in completing experiments in a laboratory environment. Staff responsibilities include interacting with children, explaining a variety of chemistry and biology topics, and maintaining laboratory stocks.

Planetarium Operator: Present astronomy programs in our Digital Planetarium, operate and monitor computer and projection equipment, and manage crowds and physical space. Public speaking, knowledge/interest in astronomy and night sky, comfortable learning digital planetarium software and technology, and a keen eye for detail are all necessary skills.

Summer Camp All-day Assistants: Provide support to week long summer camp programs by assisting with materials, working with small groups, and providing supervision. Each program is divided by age and topic and taught by education department staff.  Must be available all five weekdays from 8:30-4:30 and work at least three camp sessions.  Camp sessions run July 2nd to August 10th.

Travelling Science Program: Deliver outreach program to libraries and summer camps as a part of a two member team.  Requires ability to be on-stage, but also facilitate smaller group activities. This position is an on-call position. Opportunities to elect to work are generally presented at least two weeks ahead of time.


All positions require:

  • Experience working with children
  • Comfort in front of audiences and with large groups
  • Familiarity with science content
  • Ability to provide excellent guest service
  • Creative problem solving skills
  • Ability to pass background check
  • Clean driving record for Travelling Science positions
  • Ability to pass background check or fingerprinting in the case of summer camp
